Classic Data Entry Jobs

Classic data entry jobs have been there for a very long time. All other forms of data entry jobs came much later with the advent of the internet but classic data entry jobs existed long before.

1. Data Entry Keyers

Data Entry Keyers' responsibilities involve accurately extracting pertinent information from all types of documents (like academia, business, legal, medical etc) and typing data into databases like excel spreadsheets or company templates.

Then this data is delivered to the customers.

Data Keyers are also part of quality control where they identify errors in the data and fix them. Data Keyers must have a typing speed of 50 Word Per Minute with a 0% error ratio. Knowledge of MS Excel is also necessary.

On average entry-level Data Keyers can easily earn anything between $10 and $15. But experienced operators can earn even more.

2. Data Entry Clerks

Data Entry Clerks follow specific procedures for completing various repetitive clerical jobs like filing documents in an alphabetical file, posting to individual accounts, calculating and posting to departmental accounts, coding etc.

You must have a High School and 2 years of prior work experience. You also must be familiar with a variety of office software, especially MS Office.

Data entry clerks can also earn up to $15 per hour.

Although a Data entry clerk’s job is quite similar to a Data entry Keyer's but there is a difference. Data entry clerks’ job involves a lot of physical activities standing for long hours or frequently carrying weights up to 20 lbs.

Both these jobs are offline but after COVID – 19 companies allow you to work from home online.

You can easily find these types of jobs on Fiverr. I have written a post here about Fiverr's best ideas where you can check how people make lots of money by selling data entry jobs services.

Regular Online Data Entry Jobs

The following two online data entry jobs form the bulk of online data entry work.

3. Converting Image to Text

This was my first online data entry job. You will be given image files which is a screenshot of a paragraph that contains medical terminologies.

You have to read from images and write them down in MS Word. A paragraph can be 100 – 150 words long. You have to convert such images into text format.

Here accuracy is very important because words are mainly medical terminologies and not regular English. Usually, data entry companies demand 99.99% accuracy. So, you have to be very careful.

For converting one image file into text format you get $3 – $4. If you convert 25 – 30 such files in a day then you can easily $80 – $100 a day.

This is the most common data entry work you will come across the internet.

4. Converting Audio to Text

Here you convert audio files into text format. You listen to audio files and reproduce them into a Word document.

You will require great listening skills because quite often voice is not clear and may contain many technical jargons. Typing speed is also very important if you want to complete a great number of files daily.

You can call it a transcribing job but it is different from a medical transcriptionist because videos do not include medical jargon.

You can earn well over $5 per file.

Medical Transcriptionist & Medical Coder

Transcriptionist jobs require training and some prior experience. However, transcriptionists earn 4 to 5 times more than other regular data entry workers.

5. Medical Transcriptionist

There is a huge demand for medical transcriptionists in the USA. Companies from the private as well as the public sector are always looking out for experienced medical transcriptionists.

A medical transcriptionist listens to various audio files and converts them into a word file.

These audio files are basically medical files, voice mail messages, phone call recordings, conference calls and other recordings.

The challenge here is a transcriptionist has to listen and type dictations from doctors with thick accents and slur words. Sometimes the voice in the video is not clear.

You need great listening skills and complete familiarity with all the medical jargon. Otherwise, you won’t be able to understand certain words.

To become a transcriptionist, you need training and an experience of at least 2 years. Companies are willing to pay $20 – $25 per hour to medical transcriptionists.

6. Medical Coder

A Medical coder has to read the patient’s health report, analyze his/her medical history such as illnesses being diagnosed, and treatment given and then based on charts & reports transcribe the patient’s medical history.

Medical coders transcribe codes into a “Shorthand” writing style which is then used by doctors, medical professionals and health insurance companies to know patients’ medical history.

This job is not for everyone because you need a certificate or a degree in medical coding. Prior work experience and training is also required.

The salary is the same as a medical transcriptionist.

These two jobs can be called data entry work but they are not for everyone.

Amazon Jobs

7. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Amazon Mechanical Turk also known as mTurk is one of its kind data entry platform that gives an opportunity to data entry workers across the USA to work online.

mTurk provides you with tasks on behalf of other companies and third-party clients.

At mTurk a task is also called HITs or Human Intelligence Task which you have to complete and submit them.

Basically, there are 3 Types of HITs

  1. Micro data Entry (Coming later)
  2. Surveys (Coming later)
  3. Transcription Jobs

For each HIT you are paid just 5 to 10 cents however for surveys you earn more. So, to make more money you have to smartly choose high-paying HITs.

However, you have to qualify first in order to work with mTurk. You have to pass a test before clients give you certain tasks. There are high chances that you might get rejected.

Hence, it is a serious job. Professional data entry operators earn up to $3000 per month by picking high paying HITs only. If you don't get approval in mTurk, then there are other websites like mTurk where you can work.

Captioning jobs are a bit more advanced than Captcha solving. Here you have to create headings and captions for an image. You need some creativity here. It is just like creating memes on social media.

You write an appropriate heading or a caption for an image. The caption you write must justify the images. With the boom of social media platforms like Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter captioning jobs are readily available online.

10. Copy & Paste Jobs

As the name says you copy content from one file and paste it to another after doing some formatting.

You will be converting a PDF file into a Word Document or Vice Versa. Excel to Word, Word to Excel. Content can be text, numbers, letters and all other kinds of data.

Usually, you have to copy-paste more than 10,000 words per file. In some copy-paste jobs, you also have to copy and paste data fields like Name, Address, phone number, and email into database suites like MS Access, Oracle, etc.

In some cases, you have to sort data in a given table and paste it into a separate Excel Spreadsheet.

Each company gives specific instructions before you take up the job.

11. Data Formatting Job

Formatting jobs include less typing and more formatting. In a typical formatting job, you will be asked to format content in a Word document. You have to do things like arranging the text into paragraphs, aligning them, creating bulleted lists, indentation, fonts etc.

Another example is formatting a long form that contains various fields like name, email ID, phone number etc. You will be asked to remove gaps and align them properly.

Data entry workers have to format hundreds of files daily to earn $10 – $12 per hour.

Online Form Filling and Survey Jobs

These two data entry jobs are totally different. Let me explain!

By filling out each form, you make money. Earning $50 – $75 a day with form filling job is not that difficult.

13. Online Surveys

Online surveys are different. Here you answer simple as well as tough questions on a particular topic by filling out the survey forms. You have to use your brain to answer these questions. It’s not simply entering values into fields.

A survey can have 5 to 50 questions depending on the topic. Bigger surveys take longer time to complete but you earn more money. Surveys are conducted by companies like Pew, Nielsen, Ipsos etc.

There are professionals in the USA who work full time taking surveys and earn up to $45,000 annually.
